• 5.0 out of 5 stars from David White -- Fantastic : I had read "On Liberty" by Mill and thought it was brilliant. However, I had put off reading Utilitarianism because of the way I had heard people describe this particular philosophy. While reading this book, I realized that those people had no understanding of Utilitarianism. I would highly recommend this book. John Stuart Mill had an IQ of 190 and was trained from a very young age to take up the cause where Jeremy Bentham left off. I think my biggest takeaway from the book is that one must act with nobility (honor, goodness, decency integrity) when pursuing the Greatest Happiness principle that is Utilitarianism. In other words, taking from 1 person to give to 2 other people, although increasing overall happiness, does not qualify as Utilitarian act because it is no decent to take what does not belong to you. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Asko Korpela -- Justice as utility : Or actually vice versa, utility applied properly in the society turns out, boils down to justice. Justice, in its turn, takes a wide variety of disguises, from the lex talionis, as we are taught the name of the old principle: an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth to the various notions of justful taxation. The former has been abandoned in the present Western societies, and the latter continuously debated. Generally accepted is the principle of progressive taxation, which is mild for small earnings and severe for big. But equally it is accepted as justice and seen utilitarian that talent and diligency are remunerated more than lazyness and ineffectiveness. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2016 )

I thoroughly enjoyed the case made for Utilitarianism, although I'm not going to be swayed away from my opinion that it is wrong. This is something you should read at an advanced level of philosophy. The essay first appeared as a series of three articles published in Fraser's Magazine in 1861; the articles were collected and reprinted as a single book in 1863. Mill's aim in the book is to explain what utilitarianism is, to show why it is the best theory of ethics, and to defend it against a wide range of criticisms and misunderstandings. Though heavily criticized both in Mill's lifetime and in the years since, "Utilitarianism" did a great deal to popularize utilitarian ethics and is probably the most influential philosophical articulation of a liberal humanistic morality that was produced in the 19th century. Largely owing to Mill, utilitarianism rapidly became the dominant ethical theory in Anglo-American philosophy for the better part of a century. Though few contemporary ethicists today would agree with all elements of Mill's hedonistic moral philosophy, utilitarianism remains a live option in ethical theory today, and Mill's book is unquestionably the most famous defense of the utilitarian view ever written and is still widely assigned in university ethics courses around the world. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Roger -- J. S. Mill is the Best of the Utilitarian Writers : You can find many reasons for spotting the blind side of Mill. His arguments for the 'Greatest Good' or the 'Greatest Happiness for the greatest number are not convincing. However in this post Christian age what else have you? Post Modern Confusion? The madness of Nietzsche and his unlikely and improbable Overman? Mills attempted to offer the Victorians a measure of ethical standards. His problem was that Victorian Britain was so infused with the Judeo-Christian ethic that Mill, without realising it, judged matters from a Judeo-Christian point of view. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from daisycow -- Utilitarianism - J S Mill : This is an very clear exposition of the creed of Jeremy Bentham with explanation and further clarification by Mill who disagreed with some of Bentham's interpretations. Mill preferred to define some pleasures, for example, as better than others. This latter might seem elitist, whereas Bentham thought all pleasures equal except in terms of quantity. Mill thought it better to be a person unhappy than to be a pig happy - which could be the topic of a good debate. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2013 )

I found it extremely educational that, despite the book being written so long ago, much of what he propounds would apply today. Much more than just a historical curiosity. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charles Wright -- Not quite as clear as On Liberty but still brilliant. : As ever Mill argues in an honest and surprisingly effective way when you consider his complex language, however I felt the overall argument was not as impressive as that in On Liberty and the Subjection of Women as an argument in favour of utilitarianism other than the importance of happiness.
